Just This Side of Heaven: Dog book review

Ah, the dog days of summer. Hot days, high humidity, trying to keep cool. Those images aside, many of us associate summer with a good beach read. If you’re anything like I am, you are fussy and/or particular about what you read and how long you commit to the pages before putting it aside. Life is short and all.
So when the book “Just This Side of Heaven” came across my desk, I decided to take a break and read through the first few pages. Okay, make that chapters. Alright, maybe I could take a longer lunch and read half the book. Four hours later, a few tissues and I had finished this book in total.
And so will you.
Author Timothy Glass, of the popular sleepytown beagle series, weaves a good tale well told. Isn’t that what a fine read is all about?
A journey of healing, hope, spirits renewed, and love abound, Just This Side of Heaven has a little bit of everything. Without spoiling the tale, this is a true story of a man who loses his canine best friend, seeks online grieving support, and finds unexpected love.
The questions so many of us ask are shared in the sentiments expressed by this book. “The simple fact is love is love; it does not distinguish between two legs and four,” Glass writes. As dog lovers, who cannot relate to that?
As an avid reader, I personally appreciate photos with true stories. I like to flip back to the images and place a face with the name, a portrait with the prose. Glass doesn’t disappoint, as he gives the reader several images of the beagles with which he has walked through this life.
The parallels to my own life and loss of my cocker spaniel were astonishing. I’ve been missing my little girl every day since she crossed to the bridge. Lately though I have that ‘elephants sitting on my chest’ twinge that accompanies loss of a life taken too soon. Glass reminded me that love never ends.
The circle of life forms its eternal structure in this book. This is a well-written book, easy to read and highly recommended for those who have lost a precious dog, need an understanding voice and care about dogs.
